Sustainability has become a big buzzword in recent years. However, it’s certainly not something to be written off as a passing trend. More and more businesses are cottoning on to the benefits of sustainable construction – and roofing is a vital factor when creating an eco-friendly premises.

Green Roofs – Rising Popularity?

Sustainable building, such as green roofs, PV solar panels and recycled materials, have enjoyed a surge in popularity. BBC Research (who monitor technology-based markets across the world) estimate that expenditure on eco-friendly retrofits for commercial buildings (both public and privately owned) will grow by 9.2% in the next few years. They predict that the industry, which saw global spending equalling $85.1billion in 2015, will equal as much as $132.3billion by 2020. That’s a significant increase.

Some global markets are stronger than others – particularly North America. However, parts of Europe are leading the way in this field (particularly with green roofing) and the UK looks set to follow suit.

What are the Advantages?

Initially, there was some reservation towards green roofing within the UK. This is typical with any form of new technology, and to an extent, was anticipated by those in the industry. Businesses were concerned with the aesthetic appeal of sedum roofing, and unfamiliar with maintenance requirements and so forth.

However, as more companies embrace green roofing, more are appreciating its unique benefits; and indeed, eco-friendly roofing is becoming highly desirable. Green roofing offers:

  • Energy efficiency. Green roofs offer greater insulation, which reduces the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable temperature within the building. Roofs are the site of most significant heat loss in the colder months, so this extra insulation is a big advantage.
  • Reduced fire risk. Green roofs have a lower burning heat load than conventional roofs, which offers additional protection in the event of a fire.
  • Reduced noise pollution. Green roofs are exceptionally good at muffling sound, particularly low frequency noises. It can reduce noise pollution from traffic etc. by as much as 40 decibels.
  • Biodiversity and wildlife. Green roofs are a haven for both flora and fauna – and improve air quality in the surrounding area.
  • Aesthetic appeal. As time goes on, businesses are beginning to appreciate the visual appeal of green roofing, and the pleasant landscape that it can create outside the office window!
  • Eco-credentials. By investing in a green roof, businesses send out a clear message; that they’re conscientious and care about the environment. This resonates well with the general public and can improve customer perception of the company.
